Malas are prayer necklaces used by buddhists all around the world. They are composed of exactly 108 beads; each one of these beads containing one of 108 buddha’s names according to the sacred buddhist scriptures. Malas are oftentimes made of precious woods and seeds or precious and semi-precious stones. Malas sometime come with a different type of bead for every 36 beads in order to help with the reciting and counting. Malas can be worn either as a fashion accessory or as a true meditation helper. You can wear this mala on the wrist by wrapping it around 3 times or you can wear this mala as a necklace.

This mala is made of 108 skull shaped yak bone beads (from Nepal). In hinduism and buddhism, skulls are often depicted as a metaphor of the ever changing cycle of life. Indian gods can often be seen wearing necklaces made of human skulls (see Kali or Sheeva). Those skulls also serve them as a protection because they scare the forces of evil away.
